Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
What is Blepharoplasty?
Due to the effects of aging, particularly influenced by gravity, sagging eyelids can make a person appear older and more tired. In such cases, addressing this issue is possible through a simple intervention using modern techniques, known as "Blepharoplasty." Eyelid aesthetic surgeries can be categorized into two main branches.
Upper Eyelid Aesthetic Surgery
Upper eyelid aesthetics are performed when the skin above the eye droops onto the eye, sometimes accompanied by the sagging of the brow and forehead skin. This is assessed in conjunction with the brow. There are two fat pads beneath the upper eyelid, and problems can arise from their excessive enlargement or the herniation of the tear sac. Treatment may involve addressing all or part of these issues, focusing on the root cause. This procedure, performed under local anesthesia, typically takes between 1 to 1.5 hours.
Excess eyelid skin and, if necessary, some of the orbicularis muscle (the muscle around the eyelid) are removed. In the later stages, there may be no visible scars or, at most, a faint one, as it aligns with the crease of the eyelid, making it inconspicuous to an observer. Patients are discharged the same day, and they can return to their daily lives one day after the surgery.
Lower Eyelid Aesthetic Surgery
In Lower Eyelid Aesthetic Surgery, the reasons for treatment are significantly different from those of upper eyelid aesthetics, resulting in distinct treatment approaches. The lower eyelid is directly related to the mid-face. The descent of the mid-face, the prominence of the lower eyelid fat pads, and the sagging of the lower eyelid skin are common issues. There are three fat pads beneath the lower eyelid. The problem may be the pronounced herniation of fats, excessive sagging of the lower eyelid skin, or the drooping of the lash line. The surgical technique varies depending on the cause, including transconjunctival (from inside the eyelid) or transcutaneous (under the lash line with a skin incision) approaches.
